The friendly folks at Kicker were kind enough to send me a ZK500 for review! So here's my take: it's a high-five. Here's why:

The dock is compatible with all Zune players and comes with plates to adjust to the Zune 30, 4/8 and 80gb models. And the design is sleek:

The remote works really well and has a similar feel to using your Zune.

The dock comes with a rubber knob to protect your Zune from shaking around too much:

. . . which comes in handy when you've got the 40-watt stereo amp, and two five inch woofers and two 20mm silk dome tweeters.

You also have a composite video out and auxillary input, incase you want to plug something else in.

See more photos of the ZK500 here.

I heard this thing at CES, sounds pretty good.  The price really hurts it though, maybe if it was like $99.  Even then I'd still rather get the iHome for Zune since I get a few more features at a much better price.

The other big problem with the product, it looks horrible.  I mean Zune trys to come off with this awesome artistic feel to their players and then next thing you know, they partner up with Kicker?  Talk about culture clash.  Who the heck cares?  Get a real company like Bose or something more credible.

Oh well nice try all the same Kicker, perhaps you guys should just stick to what you know best, outfitting the "mid-west's" teenagers cars with mediocre sound and designs.

I guess it comes expected from a company who's name came from the fact that they're products we known as "A** Kickers" from Oklahoma none the less.

Come on Zune I know you guys can do better than this.  Don't let us down. Keep us proud of supporting you.

"zune fan" : You dog KICKER on this product about everything but what matters - they made another product that sounds good. KICKER knows music and how to deliver it in everything they make.  Even in your comments, you say it sounded pretty good! That's as "credible" as I need when I want to listen to my music.

Thanks a lot

Hey Chad,

I'm guessing you bought your Zune because it sounds "Good" as you said.   If that's the main reason why people buy things then why hasn't Zune itself been able to gain more market share?

The truth is people take three things into consideration when buying anything.  Design, Function, and Price.

Same holds true for Kicker, they have something that yes I admit sounds good but the design and function of that product doesn't anywhere near warrent the price point of their system.  I guess that's entirely evident in the fact that they started selling it at $349.99 and dropped it to $249.99.

All I'm saying is that while their product sounds good, the thing looks horrible, but even it if looked better the price point isn't there.

Again I conceed that I do criticize Kicker on everything from who they are to what the product looks like but simple fact remains if this was all about how good it sounds then these things should be flying off the shelves.  When in truth they look horrible and cost too much for the sound quaility they give.

Of course I'm sure I don't have to point out that the market is totally flooded with these things and let's not forget a company called VAF that made a speaker dock also which costed $600.00 when it came out, where are they now? And they're now down to $500.00.  Are you seriously going to tell me that their exceptional sound quality is the only thing that matters? I suppose you bought one under that reason.  Well did ya?

Face it for the price, function, and design iHome so far wins out.

Zune can still partner with much better accessory manufacturers.

Credibility isn't only in the sounds quality otherwise Zune would have dominated Apple a long time ago.

Raise your Zune to the hopes that they'll move forward if they don't die out first.  Which they will if they keep partnering with companies like Kicker.

I recently won a ZK500 from Zunerama, and am completely pleased with it.  "Zune Fan's" comments notwithstanding (or relevant)I think the unit looks good, sounds terrific, and it's a good match for the Zune.  Of course the price is a little more than I'd willfully pay, but it's currently running around $250 when I did a quick Google search, and that's not awful.

Zune Fan actually sounds like he should switch over to iPod, since he keeps pimping the iHome.  His comments are pretty off-base, and this is coming from someone who owns a ZK500 now.

Nice. but can you check this with Kicker:

this is like the 3rd time a post like the one above shows in Zune related boards.

and ask them above this:

what happened to that speaker system ?

DeS,

I'm a little confused, you agree that the price point is off yet you same i'm off base?  Which is it?

Again I said the sounds was good, but the price sucks, and well hell the design is as I already said, horrible!

Well, glad we cleared that up, glad to see DeS agrees with me.

Ricardo, thank you so much for showing proof positive what I'm trying to say here.

Everyone should really read what Ricardo posted.  Especially Kicker.

Ok gang, let's leave the personal attacks and "you're an idiot" posts out of this thread. Thanks!

Cesar, Did someone seriously say as much?

Oh well, too bad people can't argue without getting personal.

Thanks all the same everyone.

If design/style did not factor into people's hardware purchases, a certain other company with a fruit for a logo would have gone out of business years ago and Microsoft would have never added all the visual flare to Vista, and we'd all be driving gray boxes with wheels, etc.

The problem with this product is, it was CLEARLY designed for the first-generation Zune--look at the screen/dial mimicking the first-gen Zune.

Also, I'm quite happy with my $99 iHome, esp for wireless syncing since it doubles as a base/charger. And yes, Kicker has a pretty crappy brand image though.

Who cares... if you don't like it, don't buy it.

The important thing is that there are options.  I have the iHome Alarm clock and it's a great product.  Features, style and price is what led me to buy this.

Now, I need a system to put in my back yard that kicks.  I'd love to get more information on this Kicker device.

Just a one-off, why are you hosting photos on Flickr, and not Windows Live?  As for Kicker, I like it, but the design is really bulky.  Not sure this would work with my minimalist lifestyle.
